Activity Description

Obesity is a metabolic disease represented by excessive adipose tissue. Its classification is based on the body mass index (BMI), which is a relationship between weight and height. It is a chronic condition associated with high morbidity and mortality; therefore, it requires prompt diagnosis and treatmentt. This activity reviews the evaluation and pharmacologic treatment of obesity and highlights the role of the interprofessional team in evaluating and treating patients with this condition.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the learner will be better able to:

  • Review the pharmacological treatment options for patients with obesity.
  • Describe the outcomes of the main studies involving weight loss medications.
  • Summarize the indications for drug-based treatment for obesity.
  • Outline some potential contraindications to the use of weight loss medications.
