Activity Description

Acalculous cholecystitis is a hypokinetic condition of gallbladder emptying. It often presents as an acute ailment (acute cholecystitis), but it can also exhibit more chronic (chronic cholecystitis) symptoms. Acalculous cholecystitis is a life-threatening disorder that has a high risk of perforation and necrosis compared to the more typical calculous disease. This activity reviews the evaluation and treatment of this acalculous cholecystitis and touches on the importance of an integrated interprofessional team in improving outcomes for these patients.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the learner will be better able to:

  • Review the epidemiology and identify some risk factors associated with the development of acalculous cholecystitis.
  • Explain the pathophysiology of acalculous cholecystitis.
  • Describe treatment considerations for patients with acalculous cholecystitis.
  • Outline the importance of a high-functioning and communicative interprofessional team in recognizing and managing patients with acalculous cholecystitis.
