Activity Description

Unstable angina is a clinical syndrome characterized by myocardial ischemia without sustained ST-segment elevation or biochemical evidence of myocardial necrosis. This condition falls within the spectrum of acute coronary syndromes, along with ST-elevation myocardial infarction and non–ST-elevation myocardial infarction. Unstable angina typically presents as chest pain that is new in onset, occurs at rest, or exhibits a worsening pattern. The condition is associated with an increased risk of myocardial infarction and requires prompt recognition and management. Diagnosis is based on clinical assessment, electrocardiographic changes, and normal or minimally elevated cardiac biomarkers. Risk factors include advanced age, smoking, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, hyperlipidemia, and a history of coronary artery disease. Management involves initiation of antiplatelet therapy, anticoagulation, nitrates, β-blockers, and risk stratification to determine the need for early invasive intervention.

This continuing medical education activity is designed to enhance clinician competence in the evaluation and management of unstable angina. Participants develop a deeper understanding of the condition’s pathophysiology, risk factors, clinical presentation, and differentiation from other causes of chest pain. Emphasis is placed on current diagnostic criteria, therapeutic strategies, and guideline-directed medical therapy. The activity also underscores the importance of collaboration within interprofessional teams, including physicians, nurses, pharmacists, and other allied health professionals. Effective team-based care facilitates timely diagnosis, coordinated treatment planning, and adherence to evidence-based protocols, ultimately improving outcomes for individuals presenting with acute coronary syndromes.

Target Audience

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of physicians, physician associates, nurses, pharmacists, and nurse practitioners.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the learner will be better able to:

  • Differentiate unstable angina from other causes of chest pain based on clinical and diagnostic features.

  • Implement personalized, evidence-based management approaches for unstable angina.

  • Improve communication strategies to educate patients about the signs and symptoms of unstable angina, the importance of timely medical attention, and adherence to prescribed treatment plans to reduce the risk of complications.

  • Collaborate with the interprofessional team to educate, treat, and monitor patients with unstable angina to improve health outcomes and reduce morbidity and mortality.
