Activity Description

Vasoactive intestinal peptide-secreting tumors (VIPomas) are rare neuroendocrine tumors of the pancreas that secrete vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP), leading to profound watery diarrhea, hypokalemia, and achlorhydria, or WDHA syndrome. These tumors are usually malignant and may metastasize, primarily to the liver and lymph nodes. Patients often present with chronic, secretory diarrhea resistant to fasting, severe dehydration, muscle weakness due to electrolyte imbalances, and metabolic acidosis. Diagnosis involves measuring serum VIP levels, imaging studies like computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging to locate the tumor, and ruling out other causes of secretory diarrhea. Treatment includes fluid and electrolyte management, somatostatin analogs (eg, octreotide), and surgical resection when feasible.

This course provides healthcare professionals with critical knowledge and skills to enhance the diagnosis, management, and treatment of VIPomas. Participants learn to recognize hallmark clinical features, implement effective diagnostic strategies, and apply the latest therapeutic approaches, including pharmacologic and surgical interventions. Additionally, the course emphasizes multidisciplinary collaboration, ensuring optimal fluid-electrolyte management and long-term follow-up to improve patient outcomes. From this course, clinicians are better equipped to differentiate VIPoma from other causes of secretory diarrhea, prevent complications, and deliver patient-centered care through effective interprofessional communication and coordination. This collaborative approach unites diverse clinical perspectives to ensure comprehensive evaluations, timely interventions, and seamless transitions in care, ultimately enhancing patient outcomes and reducing complications in VIPoma management.

Target Audience

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of physicians, physician associates, nurses, pharmacists, and nurse practitioners.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the learner will be better able to:

  • Identify the classic clinical presentation of vasoactive intestinal peptide-secreting tumors, including chronic secretory diarrhea, dehydration, and electrolyte imbalances.

  • Screen patients with unexplained persistent diarrhea using appropriate biochemical tests, including serum vasoactive intestinal peptide levels and electrolyte panels.

  • Assess findings from computed tomography, magnetic resonance, and somatostatin receptor-based imaging to localize and stage vasoactive intestinal peptide-secreting tumors.

  • Communicate effectively within the interprofessional team to ensure timely identification of vasoactive intestinal peptide-secreting tumor symptoms, appropriate diagnostic testing, and coordinated patient care.
