Activity Description

Domestic violence in Florida is legally defined as "Any assault, aggravated assault, battery, aggravated battery, sexual assault, sexual battery, stalking, aggravated stalking, kidnapping, false imprisonment, or any other criminal offenses resulting in physical injury or death of a family or household member by another family or household member." A Florida State Task Force was established to enhance education and increase public awareness regarding domestic violence. This task force implemented several changes to improve the detection and prevention of domestic violence. Florida has legislation requiring all physicians, nurses, dentists, dental hygienists, midwives, psychologists, and psychotherapists to obtain 2 hours of domestic violence education every third renewal period. The Domestic Violence Data Resource Center (DVDRC) and Domestic Violence Fatality Review teams examine cases of domestic violence that result in fatalities and identify potential policy changes that might prevent future deaths.

Domestic and family violence, including intimate partner violence, child abuse, and elder abuse, is a widespread issue in the United States, affecting an estimated 10 million people annually. These forms of violence involve children, adults, and older populations and encompass economic, physical, sexual, emotional, and psychological abuse. This activity outlines evaluation and management strategies for survivors of domestic violence in Florida and the role of healthcare providers in screening and treating individuals who have experienced abuse, with protocols established to identify signs of abuse across various medical settings. This activity also allows interdisciplinary healthcare providers to apply evidence-based guidelines in adherence to state policies and laws for survivors of domestic violence.

Target Audience

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of physicians, physician associates, nurses, pharmacists, and nurse practitioners.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the learner will be better able to:

  • Identify signs and symptoms of domestic violence across various patient demographics, including intimate partner violence and child and elder abuse.

  • Implement Florida state protocols for documenting and reporting suspected domestic violence and child and elder abuse cases in compliance with legal requirements.

  • Select appropriate referral resources, such as shelters, counseling services, and legal assistance, for survivors of domestic violence.

  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary healthcare teams, including social workers, psychologists, and law enforcement, to provide comprehensive care and ongoing support for domestic violence survivors.
