Activity Description

Child sexual abuse (CSA) involves engaging children in sexual activities they do not understand, cannot consent to, or are developmentally unprepared for, violating legal and social norms. Perpetrators are often known to the child, including family members, caregivers, teachers, and authority figures who exploit their positions of trust. Abuse can manifest in various forms, from exposure to explicit materials to physical contact. Victims may exhibit behavioral changes, unexplained injuries, or medical symptoms like sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Children in dysfunctional family environments, those exposed to substance abuse or domestic violence, and those living with nonbiologically related adults are at heightened risk.

This course explores the complexities surrounding this widespread public health issue, which frequently goes unreported, including the crucial role clinicians play in identifying and addressing CSA through trauma-informed care, sensitive medical evaluations, and collaboration with legal and protective services. Physical evidence of CSA is often absent, necessitating careful documentation, psychological support, and appropriate STI or pregnancy testing. Understanding the long-term psychological, emotional, and physical consequences of child sexual abuse is essential, as victims may experience ongoing mental health challenges, infections, unwanted pregnancies, an increased risk of substance use, and poorer educational outcomes. This activity for healthcare professionals is designed to enhance the learner's competence in identifying CSA, performing the recommended evaluation, accurately documenting and reporting suspected cases, and implementing an appropriate interprofessional approach when managing this condition to address the long-term psychological impact of CSA.

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of physicians, physician associates, nurses, pharmacists, nurse practitioners, dentists, and social workers.
