Activity Description

The World Health Organization (WHO) defines child maltreatment as “all forms of physical and emotional ill-treatment, sexual abuse, neglect, and exploitation that result in actual or potential harm to the child’s health, development or dignity.” Four main types of abuse are recognized: neglect (physical or emotional), physical abuse, psychological abuse, and sexual abuse. Abuse or maltreatment is defined as an act of commission, and neglect is defined as an act of omission in the care of a child, leading to potential or actual harm. Within New York State, the following 8 modules guide the understanding, identification, and report of child abuse or neglect cases to the State Central Register, leading to evaluation with Child Protective Services up to the standard of care in 2024.

This course explores the complexities surrounding child abuse, maltreatment, and neglect in New York State, including the current definitions, reporting, and interventions. This activity for healthcare professionals is designed to enhance the learner's competence in identifying child abuse, maltreatment, and neglect, completing documentation and reporting required by New York State, and implementing an appropriate interprofessional approach when caring for affected patients.

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of physicians, physician associates, nurses, pharmacists, nurse practitioners, dentists, and social workers.
