Activity Description

The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is an enveloped retrovirus that contains 2 copies of a single-stranded RNA genome. It causes the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) that is the last stage of HIV disease. This activity explains when this condition should be considered on a differential diagnosis, articulates how to properly evaluate for this condition, and highlights the interprofessional team's role in caring for patients with HIV.

Target Audience

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of social workers.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the learner will be better able to:

  • Describe the signs and symptoms of HIV disease.
  • Explain how the diagnosis of HIV disease is confirmed.
  • Explain treatment considerations for patients with HIV disease.
